More of Italy!

March 26, 2012

[Currently listening to Damien Rice & Norah Jones]

I am back from New Orleans and I must say that I am…tired. I was suffering from the 5-6 hour difference from Italy and that jet lag is now accompanied by the hustle and bustle of this past weekend. Before I get to New Orleans though, I thought I would let you all see some more of my favorite pictures from Italy. It has been a week since my trip and I miss it more than anything; the smell of fresh pizza, the character of the people and most of all…frolicking around thousand year old ruins. I’ll go back one day! Enjoy.

Wow, this is beautiful! It makes me miss Italy so much. It’s been far too long since I’ve gone! :) I loved the lemon trees. Such a wonderful burst of colour!

    • March 29, 2012 12:57 am

Thank you! :) I miss it so much and it has only been a week and a half. I encourage you to go again and visit the few lemon farms that exist on the Amalfi Coast; it’s such a shame people are abandoning them!

      • March 29, 2012 1:14 am

I hope to do a very extensive tour of Italy in the near future; I only got to see Umbria, Rome, and Florence with any depth. I’ll include the Amalfi Coast for certain! :)

wow love your blog!! beautiful pictures and you are gorgeous as well!

  7. March 28, 2012 7:44 pm

Love this! Do you recommend the Almalfi Coast? Currently studying abroad in Spain and wanna try to get there

    • March 29, 2012 1:03 am

Thank you! I’m jealous that you are in Spain. I studied at the University of Salamanca for a summer and fell in love with the country. I definitely do recommend the Amalfi Coast. If you want to go somewhere where there isn’t a lot of tourists and a lot of culture, Salerno and the Amalfi Coast are great options. If you do decide to visit the coast, I encourage you to visit the local farms and enjoy some fresh produce because I know they are struggling tremendously.

  8. March 28, 2012 7:45 pm

Lovely photos. I’ve visited many of these same places. It’s great to “see” these places again here on your blog.

    • March 29, 2012 1:09 am

Grazie, Emily! I was studying the culture of the Mediterranean and their diet, so I tried to capture as much culture in the photos as I could.

I’m so happy you enjoyed Italy!
I live near Salerno and I love Pompeii.
I hope you’ll visit my country again one day.
Congratulation, you’ re among freshly pressed blogs!!!!

I am so jealous of you, Valentina. I stayed in Salerno for half of my trip in Italy. Your people are as beautiful as the country you all reside in! I will definitely try to revisit again one day. And thank you! It’s weird to be among the “freshly pressed” considering this blog is more like a scrapbook for me, my friends and family. Hope to hear from you again! :)

  14. March 28, 2012 8:14 pm

Great shots! My favorites are the staircase photo, the white/purple/yellow flowers and the building where the viewer is looking upward at the four pillars. Where was that building/pillar photo taken?

    • March 29, 2012 1:54 am

Thank you! :) The photo with the four pillars is actually at the Vatican Museum, it’s the central balcony of St Peter’s Basilica where the Pope makes many appearances.

That is seriously all you can do…on top of sharing your blog on Facebook and other types of social media. Good luck, girl. :)

It has been two weeks since I was in Rome.. really miss those espressos after a good meal. your photos really show the rich flavours of Italy. Nicely done~

    • March 29, 2012 1:58 am

I was only in Rome for about 4 days, but either way I enjoyed the city. I miss Italy as well; the states lack history compared to Italy. And thank you for your kinds words! :) I truly appreciate it!

      • March 29, 2012 11:53 pm

I was only in Rome for 4 days too, so I understand what you mean by ‘only’. The Vatican City by itself takes at least half a day (at the very least) to go through. Yes, I miss walking through the layers of history in Europe. I really want to go back. Presently I am trying to relive the Europe days by cooking ‘Italian’. Really need to get a cook book.

Keep posting! Your photos are lovely :)

  47. March 29, 2012 12:50 am

Beautiful pics! My husband and I went to Rome, Positano and Tuscany in 2003 and fell completely in love with Italy. We’d go back there in a hearbeat. Something that amazed me in Rome was seeing ancient columns laying on the ground beside busy streets, as if they were nothing special.

    Grazie for your post! :)

    • March 29, 2012 2:01 am

Christine, you bring up such a great point about the ancient columns laying around the busy streets. My friends and I would sit and gawk and wonder, “Do the people who live here realize how lucky they are and if they ever get used to what they get to walk by every day?” It truly is amazing! I’m glad you enjoyed my post! :)

  48. March 29, 2012 12:55 am

    • March 29, 2012 6:35 pm

You are so sweet! Thanks for the encouraging words. And the way I see it is if you can go to great places in your dreams, you can definitely make it happen in real life. haha Take care!

  50. March 29, 2012 1:06 am

I definitely want to go, I hope it is sooner than later. My overall dream is to maybe even retire there. I love the pics of the city and it’s buildings. The one with the steps particular captures my attention. The one with you and your friends sitting around having a nice big family style dinner reminds of my cousin Bobbie’s wedding. My family went to the French side of the Pyrenees for that. A lot of old country traditions have been forgotten here. So it is nice to see those pics.

    • March 29, 2012 2:05 am

Your dreams are wonderful! Before I went on this trip me and my friends raved about Rome and the city and ironically our favorite part was going to the countryside in Cilento and cooking a Sunday brunch at a small B&B. By the end of the day we all felt like family. That to me is the essence of Italy’s culture; eating and enjoying our friends and family. I hope you do decide to retire there and if you do let me know how it goes because one day I too would love to relocate to Italy. Talk to you soon, my friend!

Beautiful! I dream of Italy. Why did you go for? I’ll have to read back to find out. But, girl, how do you stay SO beautiful while traveling? I am hoping to travel in the future and as someone who struggles with her weight, I am scared of losing the control of not eating/working out as I want…and going soft.

    • March 29, 2012 2:14 am

You are too sweet! I went for school, I studied the culture and eating habits of the Mediterranean. Well if we’re speaking about clothing, I pack a lot of basics (Jeans, t’s) and add pops of color through jackets, scarves accessories etc, allowing me to make a lot of outfits. When talking about weight, I have maintained a pretty healthy diet of eating whatever I want, but making sure there are a lot of veggies, fruits, grains and hardly any red meat. This helps me maintain weight, but in all honesty I made a pact to eat whatever I wanted on this trip because I wanted to do as the Italians did, since I was only traveling for a week and a half. haha. If you have anymore questions though, email me at ordinarylisawordpress@gmail.com. Talk to you soon! :)

      • April 4, 2012 4:17 am

For me, it was all an adventure. Every time I left the apartment, something happened. We took a walk in the park, and got locked out of our 7th floor apartment, and had to be let in by firefighters – using their bucket truck. (“Rescue Me.”) The guy with the rooftop terrace was so gorgeous I almost fell off the roof (“Fabio On the Balcony.”) We went to Venice, and Paris, and Cinque Terre….sigh….Thanks for letting me go back through your photos!

    • March 29, 2012 6:05 pm

Thank you! I am so excited for you. My friend visited Cinque Terre and said it was absolutely amazing. Take lots of pictures!

the 2 prettiest towns in Cinque Terre were quite destroyed by a freak thunderstorm last October and they are on a very slow road to recovery and rebuilding. Hopefully most restaurants and touristy places will be open by early May.

Thanks, Michael! I am so happy to hear you like my photos. I read your about me and am jealous of your job and can really relate to the part that says this “This blog is for the rednecks that attempted to squelch my creativity and ultimately pushed me to escape their world of derision and short-sightedness.” I am from Georgia and have also felt overwhelmed by some folks who are a bit more close minded than me. But thanks for reading! Hope to hear from you soon and I look forward to getting lost in your blog. Best wishes!

Italy is on my list of countries to see before the end of this year and seeing your photos just made me want to hop on a plane immediately! After all, it’s not every day that you get to run around in thousand year old ruins. Oh my goodness. I’ve read so much and even studied the culture and language. I’m officially going to buy pants one size too big just to accommodate all of the food I plan on eating. I’ll make sure to grab a camera because taking photographs – as you’ve beautifully exhibited – is one way to capture the memories and share them with others. Thanks for brightening up my day :-)

    • March 30, 2012 12:32 am

Oh my goodness! Your comment made laugh out loud! I should have thought about packing a pair of pants a size too big. haha And you’re absolutely welcome, my pleasure. Let me know when you do decide to go to Italy!

      • April 10, 2012 6:37 pm

Haha! I’m telling you — whenever you plan on some serious eating, especially in food countries, you can’t go anywhere without a size or two larger pants – they are life savers and who doesn’t love draping ? lol I definitely will! I can’t wait to read more of your stuff – keep it coming!

  140. March 29, 2012 11:26 pm

Your blog is great!!! I lived in Italy many years… now I’m in Los Angeles and I have a blog also, http://www.thegavlaks.com

  141. March 30, 2012 12:56 am

Thank you, thank you, thank you! Not only are the pictures awesome, but they remind me of my amazing experiences in Sicily and Northern Italy (and Southern France as well)! The lighting along the Mediterranean is like no other. I took so many pictures while I was there… on a brand new Kodak Advantix! lol. The photos seemed so crisp and beautiful at the time, but that was 16 years ago-they don’t compare to what today’s technology can produce! Still, they hold many happy memories. Seeing your photos, I can almost taste the fresh seafood pasta and the brick oven margarita pizzas… I can smell the lemons on the trees in everyone’s yards, rosemary in everyone’s gardens, and the olive oils on everyone’s tables… I can hear the sound of the waves crashing on the stone beaches and the American pop music (back then it was a lot of Madonna and Michael Jackson) playing at every outdoor market… I can feel the clean air as I breathe and the crisp to the bread as I break it… I can see the ancient ruins of the amphitheaters of Syracusa and Taormina, the above-ground cemeteries where whole families were berried in the same marble ‘boxes’ (for lack of a better word), and the narrow cobblestone streets [Where stop signs are written in English, so the Sicilians just beeped and blew right through them! (that's the reason my Sicilian friends gave for running the stop signs. lol) There were 22 auto body shops in one really small town because of all the accidents that happen when someone attempts to drive down those narrow cobblestone streets that are lined with parked cars on both sides]. The memories are endless-and thanks to your pictures, still as vivid as they were 16 years ago! Thanks again for your post!

    • March 31, 2012 1:53 am

It was! And I’ve heard so much good about the Amalfi coast as well. I think I have to go back there soon. Maybe try Amalfi this time. :)

Although everyone has already said so (and you’re probably fed up with hearing so…!) but great photos, you’ve really captured the warmth and romance of the south and its people-thats what real tourism should be all about, and not just going somewhere to catch some rays! Thanks for sharing your photos, it seems like it was an amazing trip.

    • March 31, 2012 6:20 pm

I completely agree with your statement on tourism! Well stated, my friend. And you are welcome! Thank YOU for the lovely comment!
